Frequently asked questions about teletherapy with play on words:

+ What is teletherapy?

Teletherapy is another way of providing speech and language services. At Play on Words, we use Zoom for our teletherapy sessions. This service delivery model allows us to provide your child with the same speech-language services as traditional in-person sessions, but gives your family added convenience. We have a trained teletherapist who is dedicated to our teletherapy program.

+ Is there a specific computer/ program that I need for my child to do teletherapy?

All you need is a computer, an iPad or other tablet, or a smartphone with internet and video capabilities.
We use Zoom for teletherapy sessions, and it is free for you to make a Zoom account. We will send an email with a link and passcode to join the Zoom Room foAlwayr your child’s speech session. Zoom is a HIPPA compliant platform, and the Zoom virtual rooms are only accessible by the link provided or a password.

+ Who would benefit from teletherapy?

Families that live too far from the office to travel multiple times per week, families with multiple children that may have difficulty attending sessions regularly, children with anxiety or children that are medically complex and feel more comfortable receiving therapy within their home environment.
Teletherapy is not necessarily a good fit for every child. If your child has difficulty remaining in one place or requires tactile cues to work on speech sounds, your child may require in-person therapy. If we feel your child would benefit from in-person therapy, we will discuss these options with you.

+ Is teletherapy as effective as in-person speech therapy?

Here at Play on Words we work hard to ensure that the therapy quality you get in our office speech room is the same that you’ll get on the Zoom speech room. Teletherapy allows us to offer the same speech and language sessions in a more convenient and accessible way. Current research shows that teletherapy is an effective option for speech-language services. Findings also suggest that there is no significant difference in the progress or outcomes for teletherapy versus in-person therapy sessions.

+ What does a teletherapy session look like?

You and your child will sign on to the private Zoom room with one of our teletherapists. Sessions are one-on-one and individualized to meet your child’s therapy goals. Teletherapy allows us to use a variety of activities in our sessions, both digital and hands-on. Activities in a teletherapy session with Play on Words might include: books or e-books, hands-on games, Boom Cards Learning digital activities, activities using a green screen, board games or virtual games your child loves.

+ Can I do some sessions in person and some on teletherapy?

Yes! You can choose to attend some sessions at our Naples office and some sessions virtually through teletherapy. If you’re considering adding a day of therapy each week, but don’t know if you can make it to the office in time, you can add an additional day via teletherapy, right from your home.

+ Do I need to be present in all of the sessions?

That is up to you! Some children do very well when it is one-on-one with the therapist, while others benefit from having Mom or Dad sitting at the table with them during the session. You are always more than welcome to sit-in on the virtual sessions! If you have little ones (3 years and under), we recommend you are present throughout the session.
